The addiction treatment industry is dangerously unregulated. John Oliver explains why many rehab programs should incorporate more evidence-based care and carefully reconsider their doctor-to-horse ratio.

The theme of John’s many videos on problematic industries seems to be the shocking lack of oversight, public or private. I feel like he criticizes Republicans mostly on the grounds of opposing oversight while passing outmoded morality laws, which is certainly justified reasons. There needs to be more oversight in many key industries.

Richard Tate?!?!? DICK Tate?!?!?
Oh if only John knew how significant of an event would happen at the Four Season.

I was briefly in rehab with equine therapy. I said the exact same thing. I couldn't give less of a fuck about horses. I need purpose in my life, not Jesus and horses. That was like a foreign language to those people.

A friend asked how I made it this far in my recovery, my answer was simple, just like my new life...simple and one day at a time while remaining grateful for everything I have in my life.

i thought the best way to help people through rehab (both getting patients and helping) is offering small amounts of drugs in a safe environment and what the addicts have to do to get them is get counseling
I've been addicted to Benzodiazepines for years. I have not been able to find a rehab/detox that is worth a damn or covered by insurance. It can be terrifying to want help, but not know where to go.
I recommend a 12 step program to send a loved one to rehab.. unless they’re an atheist then you’ll have a big problem with step 2
Sucks my dad told me about a month ago a guy I used be best friends with in school, I'm talking kindergarten had overdosed this year. His father told my dad he spent over 100k on rehab treatments. I just keep thinking about the laughs we had over 25 years ago and what happened to send him down the path that led to his death.
Someone on John's writing team has a really...uh...interesting...thing for horses.
3:13 this quote hit me really hard... about a month ago I lost my uncle in south Florida. He moved there to help with his drug addiction but it became worse, starting doing crack , stealing from stores, he even got thrown out of a car at one point by someone else on drugs. He was never actually able to get treatment and just ended up dying in his 50s.
So when he says four seasons, is that of the total landscaping variety?
My niece has been in and out of Rehab centers for years including halfway houses. They do nothing for them. They see a counselor once a week. They have a group therapy once a week and that's it. They sit around and play board games. They don't teach them coping skills or stress management. They don't have exercise classes or teach crafting like knitting, painting, etc. They don't teach life skills, like how to budget money and how to balance a check book. People like my niece have been high for so long, they literally have no idea how to be a normal average person with a job and responsibilities. This would be a great time to teach them these skills but instead, they sit there until they decide to get up and leave because it's pointless. I don't think my niece has ever stayed in a program til the end once in ten years.

I developed an Adderall addiction in college. I told my father, who used to be an alcoholic, that I should go to a rehab clinic to get clean. He said to me, "Those places are scams; talk to a drug councilor, and then go to AA or NA instead." Looking back on it, I'm glad I took his advice."
As a professional in this field, I’m giving this a standing ovation

I almost broke into tears through this because of my experience with addiction and rehab. I'm not addicted, my mom is a raging alcoholic and has been for years. She spent much most of my teenage years telling me that I would never have a partner or a marriage or a family, and I'd die alone and a virgin. She started drinking when I told her that I was transitioning to make my body more in line with my gender. It's just been an absolute whirlwind of emotions dealing with someone who is so far in the deep end. She told me terrible things that no child should ever hear, let alone from their parents, about very sensitive subjects, most of the time while drunk. When she was admitted into RCA (Recovery Centers of America), the cost was roughly $30,000 for a month of treatment. Insurance would cover detox week, no questions asked. The problem was twisting their arm to cover the full month, because they needed to be convinced that she was in critical condition and needed the treatment. For that much effort, I was fortunate enough to see where that money was going towards. They had a very nice, up to date gym to work out in (beats planet fitness any day of the week) and had just recently hired a world class yoga instructor. The scenery was very nice and clean... it was apparent that the money was going toward the experience of being at rehab. On the treatment side, it was incredibly faith based. They followed the 12 steps to the letter, and they required that the patient needed to accept god into their lives in order to be healed. They had a spiritual counselor, and bible readings. To be fair, they did also offer science based approaches to addiction and had people on proper medication and actual psychological therapists as part of their staff. None of this mattered without the faith based approach apparently. It gave me cult-like vibes and I could see it being patronizing towards non-christian patients struggling from the same disease of drug and alcohol addiction that my mom suffered from. When she was released from rehab, she was sober for a week, started drinking again, and was back to rehab for another month. Once she was released for that month, she hit it up with a rehab buddy and they partied pretty hard. I was at work when my phone was blowing up about a drug bust at the guys party in another state where my mom was, and needed a ride home. My grandma from my mom's side died 2 months after I was born. She was lying face down over the toilet, with vodka bottles all over the floor. My mom tried to find help, but now she is only worse off than she was before, and rehab did not do anything to change that. Addiction is serious, it is life and death to some people. Rehab doesn't always work, some people are just too far gone. It's heralded as a get out of jail free card for the addicted, but it only lasts a month. They're trying to tackle an issue that takes a lifetime to cope with. It is far too much money, for too little of what actually helps, and is dominated by religious undertones that do not actually help. At least know that, if you aren't in a situation where addiction is a real force, many people are.
So basically, if you call something a rehab, you can do literally anything for literally any price and as long as you SAY it’s successful, it’s perfectly legal?!! At that point, rehab is practically a magic word that makes people owe you money
NEVER USE Summit Malibu's TREATMENT PROGRAM. AS THEY ARE THIEVES AND WILL TREAT THE CLIENT WORSE THAN AN ANIMAL IN A CAGE. THEY HAVE NO CLUE AS TO HOW HELP ANYONE. I AM MENTIONING THIS FROM A RECENT TERRORIZING EXPERIENCE I HAD AT THIS FACILITY. THUS, NEVER EVER GO TO THIS PLACE, Summit Malibu FOR ANY SORT OF MENTAL OR ALCOHOL ADDICTION / DRUG ADDICTION TREATMENT WHATSOEVER, PERIOD! THEY TERRORIZE THEIR CLIENTS IF THEY DESIRE! THEY NEVER RETURNED TO ME CERTAIN MEDICATIONS THEY CONFISCATED FROM ME TO ESSENTIALLY ILLEGALLY SENDING ANYONE TO ALMOST A PRISON. Summit Malibu IS A TOTAL SHAM! SAD TO SAY THIS, AS I HAVE USED THEIR PROGRAM, SEVERAL YEARS AGO FOR HELP AT THE TIME (NOT FOR DRUGS OR ALCOHOL). YET RECENTLY THEY ARE LIARS TO PEOPLE WHO ARE CLIENTS. I KNOW THE OWNER AS WELL FROM YEARS AGO. I DO NOT GET THEIR "TRIP" NOW! THE PROGRAM MUST BE SHUT DOWN ASAP!
Why isn't any one talking about the tony the tiger shooting and that 1 guy that only clapped That was hilarious
I am so disappointed that John never called out excessive urine testing as LITERALLY TAKING THE PISS

Alcohol OR drugs? Yeah right, alcohol isn't a drug, is it?
The interview with the Cliffside guy has serious Micheal Scott energy
As a recovering addict, the best place I got help was a mental hospital. Before ending up there the only thing doctors did was throw drugs at me that didn't help. They offer med management, but also set you up with social workers and outpatient care such as therapy, intensive therapy (a lot like inpatient care but with a lot more freedom) and several sources. Sadly in the US mental care is sorely overlooked and hard to get treatment for especially without insurance, and you have to keep up with it yourself, which is incredibly difficult, especially since it makes it seem like they don't care. I wish there were a better system.

Yes, plenty of things happen at Four Seasons Total Landscaping. 😂😂😂
Yea I can say as a drug addict that a drug like Buprenorphine has done wonders for me. Methadone on the other hand not so sure how well that works as my Brother has been in a clinic for Methadone where he gets it every day yet has still been using constantly while in the clinic for the last 3yrs. Me on the other hand being a Suboxone clinic which is the brand name for Buprenorphine that I have never used once while being in the clinic. Now it is basically just substituting one drug for another. Seeing how if I go more then a day without taking it I will have withdrawals. But it at least keeps me from doing dope every day and spending a shit ton of money on it every week. Never once have I felt like doing any sort of opioid while on Suboxone. It's also a drug that you can get yourself off of by slowly taking less and less MG of it. But my problem has always been the 3x that I did do that and got completely off of Suboxone that every time it happened I was back to using dope within 3months. So now I'm just at the point where I'm just gonna stay on Suboxone as I know I will stay 100% clean on it.
I'm sure that by now we all know that life-changing things DO happen at the Four Seasons.... Total landscaping...
Usually, I´m annoyed by all the rules and guidelines we have in Germany but when I hear things like this, I´m happy that we have them 🙈
Claiming you're cured is a HUGE red flag about that rehab's credibility

I'm in the hooters, I'm in the hospital. I'm in the combination hooters and hospital!
There is exactly a 0% chance that ol' Dick Taite here was *not* on cocaine when he gave that interview at Cliffside.
If John Oliver has ever been to Florida he would know that every hospital in fl is a combo hospital/hooters. That’s a given
After my first stationary therapy (12 months) I received a call of a social worker who asked to visit me for inquiry. They did a study about how people who underwent longterm therapy were doing, to gauge the success rate. Now she visited me 22 months after therapy and I was 100% sober. 3 months later I relapsed, so in the said study I'm listed in the success group. Serious studies should be done 5 yrs after treatment, then they might actually reflect partly the reality.

Wow it's almost like integrating capitalism into a system makes it all about money and not people's well-being.

I went to rehab in April of 2019 and when we went to the ranch to pet horses, a bunch of people got kicked out for having sex in the barn. Epic
I recently watched Bojack Horseman, and the Pastiches Centre really reminded me of this, a revolving door centre of sketchy practices not based in evidence, run by "Doctor Champ", who is not a Dr but is simply named "Doctor", and repeatedly stresses that he is not a therapist but a therapy horse held to no standards. It's excellently done.
Chao isn’t a sound, it’s bye in Spanish.

Strange... I tried to quit antidepressants - a legitimate drug to treat a chemical unbalance in the brain - and one day without them just made me feel like I was about to vomit my brain. So I'm not surprised she kept snorting cocaine like an anteater.
This explains so much about Florida.
I've been to rehab twice. John is 100 percent right. I am the only one left alive of my group. It's about money. Not people.
“Nothing is harder than keeping up an 8 minute call.” Are you kidding? My friend and I called up each other and stayed on the phone for 2 hours!
nah he meant a call with strangers
I have 2 kidneys
You could say those "sober homes" really like taking the piss.
let's not overlook the fact that alcoholics are mandated to go to a program with religious undertones held in churches. Stating you are athiest is enough to fail.
So, $73,000 for 30 days equals $2433.33 per night. Four Seasons is $400-$700 a night.
"And the tragedy is his son died... and remember the funny guy who hated horses? He died too..." gave me chills.
cliffside looks stoned
Ty for these videos on addiction. One thing I want to add are these rehabs push the 12 step program so hard, as if its the only thing thatll work. I tried them and i cant get any help from them. So im on medicine that helps me. Been on it for two years and have held down my job without any issues. I get to save my money instead of blowing it on pills. I get to have a normal life again with my family. They instilled in my head that any type of medicine tthat i am on now, isnt ok and will furthur the prob. Couldnt be furthur from the truth. For such a complex issue, a one size fits all approach to helping ppl isnt realistic or helpful.
I remember seeing commercials for the Cliffside Malibu and passages and that douchebag saying "I'm cured"what a bunch of crap. It's all in marketing, pictures of the ocean drawing people into a trap.
Urine (is like gold)?
