John Oliver takes a look at why people of color are routinely excluded from becoming jurors, who their absence impacts, and what we can do to create a fairer system.

So many “accidents”
The unique beard algorithmically colour because taxi metabolically collect along a spiffy helicopter. wrong, efficacious wedge
Having a majority black jury totally worked in the OJ Simpson case. They totally didn’t acquit solely because he was black.
That intelligence is not a desirable trait (apparently for many attorneys, mostly prosecutors) is something I can verify here in Texas. While in grad school, every professor I knew who would receive a summons also expected to be back in less than a hour to the extent it was almost a joke that a PhD was an assurance of not being chosen from the pool. Since graduate school, I have found that to be true. I've received at least a half dozen summons for jury duty, yet have always been dismissed. My father was an attorney in Dallas and called the jury selection process in Dallas "abysmal" for exactly that reason. He complained often that intelligence was a quick way to be stricken (and pre-emptive strikes may run out, but creativity to strike for cause is seemingly endless.) It's difficult to use emotional arguments if a juror is only going to accept something that is logically sound.
Oh! This must be the beginning of the Danbury Saga! Fun!
Juries are inherently flawed.
Been selected twice but both times they where ended in plea bargains before trial.
Why yes, I do LIKE RAKES!
lol the race card rant..classic
John Oliver nitpicking on the "Race Card" presentation is amongst the best things I've seen in a while
One of the weirdest things in the US: having to be registered in order to be able to vote... In any functioning democracy you get to vote because you are a citzien... No registration needed
I think this is more of an issue with the adversarial legal system than anything else. They are striking black jurors because in their bigotry they think the black jurors will be more harsh. A lawyer shouldn't be trying to convict someone and a lawyer shouldn't be trying to exonerate someone. Lawyers should be doing their best to seek the truth. The adversarial system breeds corruption and turns court cases into dick measuring contests for lawyers. Whoever has the biggest dick gets to either put someone in jail or protect someone from jail whether they are innocent or guilty.
Ah the start of the Danbury wars
Oj Simpson black jury concluded case in 4 hours . It took 9 months to make the case
“You dont want smart people” I've heard from college professors that the fastest way they got kicked off jury... was to simply mention they were college professors
Wow, I didnt know women were a minority, I thought 50% of humans were women. Thanks Mr. Prosecutor guy
YEAH I LOVE THAT CASTLE... SO PHUQ YOU DANBURY!
Danbury wow it has been going on for longer than I thought. Don’t Danbury this up. Love from Australia
John give me a chance to help you write and I will be the Rudy of the office!!
I know someone that said "Who wants to be tried by 12 people that are too stupid to get out of jury duty"?
The busy skate geometrically name because composition coherently guarantee by a industrious discovery. lackadaisical, chilly peen
Did Oliver acknowledge he's an owl?
Whats wrong with an actual physical wheel? I say use a wheel instead of a computer program, and have alot of rules like a government sanctioned color of paper and let a blind citizen do the drawing so there are 3 problems.
I hate racists that pretend they aren't racist. Because they know what they're doing is bad and yet still do it. At least the KKK think they are good and are open about it
Still hoping we get a Greg Perry episode next season!
"And, this is true, FUCK DANBURY!" Wait, that's true?
Pls read amendment again. Of your peers is not there! Never has been.
I didnt see any thumbs down on any replies, am I trippin??????????????????????????
Wtf I've never seen that, there is always haters
America is just so racist it's hard to wrap your head around it
Didn't even talk about how Jury instruction can vary, and jurors are not properly taught what their role is.

Controversial opinion: Striking jurors for their race should be perfectly fine. Reasoning: Given there is a pool that is fairly representative of the actual community, being of any race is just as much an indicator for impartiality as social status, religious views, fashion choice and other outward presentory facetts attorneys use. So either it should be allowed to use *any* reason - or striking a juror should *not* be possible *at all* - and not to allow any jurors to be removed is really dangerous, because your conviction could go down to the luck of the draw. Hence, I believe that it should be perfectly okay to use race as a reason to remove a juror. This obviously goes both ways, I hope that much is clear. So a black defendant must be entitled to remove just as many white jurors as the DA is allowed to remove black jurors. Again, I want to stress: This only works if the pool is fair to begin with - and both sides have equal opportunity to remove. But if those are given, I don't think making one reason "not okay" and every other reason "okay" does only one thing: breed more controversy - and nothing else.
God bless you, John Oliver, sincerely; truthfully, in Jesus Christ's living, holy, sovereign name. All is well, content and full of joy in Christ. We love you. Merry Christmas. I thank God for everyday He gives you. God is love. God bless, save, protect, empower and have mercy upon America, in Jesus Christ's returning, wrathful Judge name. Fear not. Fear God only. Psalm 117 1 O praise the Lord, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people. 2 For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the Lord endureth for ever. Mark 1:3-4 3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 4 John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. John 3:16 Authorized (King James) Version 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Did these companies choosing jurors ever take a single statistics class? Randomized selection is rudimentary...
As a german, I find this jury system itself very irritating and not really fair
Just rewatched this...I'm very upset with myself that I forgot about "Greg". I almost hope they do a segment on him when the show comes back in February. You know, in a sort of, "know thine enemy", kind of way
4:25 Assuming that they are speaking only of people who are 18 yrs old or more...How the hell are 1/3 of the adults in a "civilized" city not voting AND don't have a driver's licence?!?
From 5:45 to 7:42 What are the chances that these were really accidents?
I'm gonna say it. We gotta thank Brett Kavanaugh here. That was a respectable move. Hats off to him for catching on to that racism.
so, ppl in the comments.... do you like rakes?
There is a podcast called In The Dark that did an deep dive into the curtis flowers case and it is absolutely depressing how terrible this man's trial was handled. Good news is he is free now and all charges have been dismissed.
You're exponentially more likely to win the lottery than be a black jurrer.
great video
John Oliver "I need a race card" Props guy "That's the... least weird thing you ever asked of me"
Ah the danbury abuse begins.
Juries with a diverse makeup: 12 Angry Men All white Juries: 12 Angry Men without Juror #8.
I became addicted to John Oliver during lockdown and now I can't kick the habit. I doubt if there's been one show which hasn't made me VERY grateful I live in Australia and not the USA and this is no exception. Here, juries are chosen from the electoral rolls and there's no way anyone would know the ethnicity of anyone from those rolls. What's more, selection is done by the relevant Law Department, not a private company: that's about the silliest idea I ever heard of.
Wah, the issue is not PEOPLE forgotten, the issue is SPECIFICICLY PICKED MINOTIRIES are forgotten, WAH!
Fun fact - Hartford and New Britain make up 90% of places in Connecticut that people actively go to instead of ending up there by accident
Ok first question from europe: Why do COMPANIES handle jury summoning????? WTFFF
"It is ridiculous to assume that a juror would be bias because the defendant is the same race" Isn't this entire video about proving that all white juries are a problem? If it's ridiculous to assume any juror would bias to or against a certain race then why are multi-racial juries necessary?
Maybe people who care so little about the future of their country they can't even be bothered to register to vote aren't the best people to have on juries
I'm a white guy who consistently throws out my jury summons. I am happy to be contributing my part in ensuring juries are more racially diverse.
I will say this is where the show gets a little too left for me sometimes. I agree on the process of striking and all that, but you're championing a guy who's been judged guilty like 4 times to the same crime by multiple juries and gets by because there aren't black people in it. Like, at this point I think there's a real concern that he *actually fucking did it* because contrary to popular belief, while black people will not be partial to a black defendant, whites will not be partial to a white prosecutor. It's the exact same logic.
We were really stoned and sent my friend off to the shop with £20 to get a load of chocolate, crisps and some tobacco. He came back with a six-pack of yoghurt and bin liners, apparently, he couldn't remember what he was supposed to get so guessed. I still can't understand why he picked up the bin liners at least the yoghurt you could argue he really fancied them.
a wholefoods of Abigails hahaha im dead lool
Highly recommend the IN THE DARK Season 2 podcast in the Curtis Flowers case...
I’ve served on juries twice. I go into court expecting an episode of “Perry Mason” and instead get “I love Lucy”. During voir-dire for the first trial I was on, the procedure was that each potential juror was called up to the bench and the lawyers would ask them questions then either lawyer could strike them. In this case, each time a potential juror approached the bench, one of the lawyers would call “Strike” if that person was Black, even before they reached the bench, with NO QUESTIONS having been asked. I don’t claim I’m the most racially sensitive or politically-correct person, but even I thought “WTF? This is so BLATANT.” The trial wound up being a mess. The judge threw the case out and APOLOGIZED to the jury. On the second trial, we DID have HBO in the Jury Room
WRONG! You don't need a Driver's License, you just need to have a state issued ID, which everyone has
18:13 It's sad how most people hate jury duty and avoid it at all costs and yet this woman was perfectly willing and excited for it
“We don’t want smart people” is similar to the intent of when Trump said “I love the poorly educated!”
Wtf? I don't get the racism in this world although its been going on i would say fron the beginning, but my question is why and fu*# racism to begin with. God if your real we need another flood!
Wow I’m really shocked that Kavanaugh ruled that. I disagree with him on many issues but I agree with his verdict on that.
I wonder how long it takes Professor Duncan to get the jist of what he talks about? Sure sounds like an expert sometimes.
6:19 This is the reason a sewer plant get their name
So fucking good!
Juries don't judge the defendent, they judge the prosecutor's performance art
Clearly we need a whole bunch of judicial overhaul in this country. I’m interested to hear how it’s done in other countries. But I think juries should be truly random unless the potential juror genuinely has a conflict of interest with the case. Also, the jurors should be sufficiently provided for, and the jurors that really don’t have a great ability to complete it at that time should be able to leave bc I suppose you don’t want a juror that wants nothing more than to get out of there ASAP or has doctors appointments or something crucial. After hearing so much about court stagnation, I would think that america would try to increase its supply of lawyers and judges and clerks and legal researchers and decrease the prevalence of trial science and shit
Thanks John for talking about Allen county. The county, and this is true, that is in the worst in Indiana. And I live there
Wouldn't some sortof national Id card and registration be useful?
good news, they eventually dropped the trial against Curtis Flowers

JOHN OLIVER 2024
What's interesting in Flowers vs. Mississippi is that Clarence Thomas was a dissenting opinion. With the reason being most of the black jurors that's were dismissed knew the family.
Almost every good sounding system in America has been perverted. However standing up against the perversion makes one anti-American. Most things are not black and white but the existence of this phenomenon is convenient to facism. Welcome to the dominant fascist state of the free world.
In canada if i'm not mistaken we get chosen with our health card number, so no problem there. My sister-in-law had worked as a sheriff at court, transport the prisoner. She use to tell me if they went through all the people that were called they would go get those that skipped the call Oooor if they really had no one would go to the local shopping mall and mandate old people. Mostly because they just have time on there hands, lol. Thought that was funny. Beware the food court grandma.
Lmao! We don’t get much of that in prison either! Free “food” sure.

Welcome to America, proudly racist since 1776
Yet more race baiting with zero evidence. Your show used to be based on facts, John.
A natureza é maravilhosa
I feel truly disgusted I ever supported this man. If it were up to me, I’d send him to Iran after he’s been dragged through the streets of New York behind his own godamn limo while Trump Tower burns in the background.
Dude keeps a “race card” card in his pocket?
"Danbury, Connecticut can eat my whole ass!"
Can I change my name :(

When I had jury duty, I was allowed to go out to lunch. I went to lunch with a new jury duty friend
Here it is, here's the episode where it all started
I love that accepts and jokes about that he looks like an owl. I'm not saying he does but it's genuinely heart warming
his rant about the race card was freakin hilarious!
having lived in NYC for 9 years as a foreigner I would have loved to do jury duty, cause it's such a cliche and seen on so many TV shows. I think that experience would have been great - being part of the american fabric of life. got a card once, was surprised since I am not a citizen, but nothing ever came of it. too bad ...
I may be worried over nothing, but wouldn't making jury lists public be a risk to the safety of the jurors? Suppose a member of a crime syndicate gets convicted for murder and jailed, another member of that syndicate would find the names of witnesses, lawyers, and judge of that trial (as could already happen) but also the jurors who found them guilty. Then those people would be harassed, assaulted, or possibly killed for their member's incarceration.
