It’s alarmingly easy for a total stranger to gain total control over the life of a senior citizen. We enlisted a group of celebrities to offer a warning about predatory behavior...in a legal guardian or a hippo.

#FreeBritney I would love for you guys to shed light on her situation! I believe it would help tremendously. The media has used and abused this girl all of her life! The least they can do is help her! She is trapped in what seems to be an abusive conservatorship.

You should never ever ever answer the door to no one you’re not expecting specifically and that you didn’t specifically agree to see under a mutual agreement. Anytime you answer the door to strangers, you get what’s coming good or bad. Sadly in this case it was bad. Had the senior not answered the door and would’ve kept everything locked, it may’ve had a different outcome, especially if he never would’ve acknowledged the unexpected visitors who turned out to be thugs. Keeping a low profile and staying as quiet as absolutely possible is one good way to keep anyone from knowing whether or not you’re really home. At home, keep your doors locked and even barricaded, preferably all the way to the opposing wall if possible. It’s always a smart move to use drapes and privacy sheers for your windows. That way, it’s much harder to know whether or not you’re home. At night, use very low lighting. The batter you cover your windows and the thicker the drapes, the harder it’s going to be to know whether or not you’re in there, especially when you have the TV on. The dimmer the screen, the easier it’s going to be on the eyes after dark, the less power it’ll use and the longer that screen will last. Never have your TV, especially your big screen sitting with an sight of the road. Keep the volume low. Turn off all unused lights when you’re not in that room. After dark, just use night lights. When you park your car, if you have a garage, put your car in the garage and lock it. If your garage door has windows, paint them black from the inside with just a slight peep hole in the paint. That way, you can look out but no one can see in. Make sure your garage door lock is tamperproof and make sure you have a gun handy with lots of ammo. Keep that gun properly maintained and ready to go. Learn to be a sharpshooter and only shoot when absolutely necessary. Learn how to shoot from behind stuff if you ever do need that gun. It’s a good idea to also plenty of supplies on hand wherever you may choose to store it. During winter, it’s always a smart move to not go out so much if you don’t have to be out. This is when you should order out and have stuff delivered. If you’re in an area you don’t have to go out to the mailbox and can have stuff delivered straight to your door, go for that as well as telemedicine. You should be able to do a virtual visit even away from home. You can do virtual visits even on public Wi-Fi if you happen to be somewhere that offers it. You don’t necessarily have to do telemedicine at home if you don’t want to and especially if you think your doctor could possibly have you kidnapped from your home. Don’t tell anyone where you’re going if you don’t feel safe doing so. If you do, make sure it’s someone who won’t give out no info on you no matter what When dealing with a bank account, go for online banking and don’t carry cash. Opt instead for online banking but only on your own private net work. When doing online banking, lock your card when it’s not being used. If your bank offers it, also lock down your account. If possible, also put all of your money into an able account in the state of your choice. Be wise, some of them charge a fee, some more than others whereas others are free. Choose wisely. Plan and pay off your final arrangements. Buy your casket and burial plot. Pay off everything if possible so no one has any room to make those difficult decisions and have some thing done to you that maybe you don’t want done to you. If you want burial and not cremation, then you better make sure you have it covered with a preneed and have it paid off hopefully by time you die or at least have some money set aside for the funeral home. If you have a Fidelity account, put your funeral home as the survivor of that account and keep it funded. Try to do your banking outside of your town by choosing a bank that’s not in your town. The further away from home you can bank if you go digital, the harder it’s going to be to grab your money. If you have a secondary bank account locally in your town, keep only one penny in each account, your checking and your savings. Then once a year have those pennies change places if your bank allows you to only move one penny. That way, if vultures rush down to the bank, all they get is two cents because that’s all their opinion is worth Finally, remember that just because someone knocks doesn’t necessarily mean you must answer, even if there were something in place mandating it. It’s up to you and you alone to see to your survival. If you’re gullible enough to open the door to random strangers, then you’re gullible enough to get what’s coming good or bad. It’s up to you to educate yourself and to wise up especially as you age. You don’t have to be gullible, you can be wise in your old age but it’s up to you to gain wisdom

Looking for answers and advice if anyone sees this who can help: my mom has had a state appointed guardian due to mental illness since I was a child. The guardian won't keep me in the loop on her care, hospitalizations, transports etc. He is too busy or just doesn't care- I don't know. He sometimes gives me vague answers to emails to get me to shut up for a while and then dissappear. The facilities can't tell me anything without the guardian allowing me to be on her HIPPA form and the guardian avoids me when I ask him for that. I can't afford to become her guardian. Her illness is extremely severe and she needs to be in a facility with round the clock care and I only make $13 an hour and can only support myself. The guardian has more funds and resources to keep her off the streets but is there a legal way to become a co guardian or a poa or -something- that will let me have basic information on how my mom is and where she is? I'm not asking for the right to make a bunch of decisions. I just want to know she is ok and have the right to know. It is so hard to find answers for my specific situation. Everything happened when I was a kid and I have no paperwork on any of the guardianship stuff. Can anyone give advice?

I can't find any reason to dislike this video, he's telling facts, really unfortunate facts but facts nonetheless
If you're worried about the Norths, they won a lawsuit for over $8 million and April Parks was sentenced to 16-40 years in prison for her actions. Makes this story easier to handle, but can't forget that not everyone gets justice
This is very painful, not for said content...but because we have to hear it from a comedy show.
The USA really feels like a capitalist distopia after watching all these segments
It's not just senior citizens, anyone can be put under guardianship over just being disabled.
April parks was sentenced to 16-40 years in prison in January this year if anyone is interested
That old Dr. Pepper woman in the beginning isn't that uncommon, most of the old people I've met who have talked about outliving their doctors usually have an oddly giddy tone doing so. I think they're just so smug about proving those doctors wrong in the absolutely best, if a bit sadistic, way.
"Two doctors told me if I drink Dr Pepper I would die, but they died first." That first old lady was a gangster lol
There’s this one girl that married a 97 year old just for his money Some guardians are just terrible
How is a person with a physical disability unable to make decisions for themself. Asshole judge at the start of this one.
I watch this Netflix special and I have to tell you I was crying my eyes out I have never heard of this.. I couldn't even believe what was happening at all.. and whoever that one lady was with the dumb smirk on her ugly mouth I wanted to jump in the screen and punch her lights out she was so evil.. the man's money who she took and said he was incompetent on the business lived in a very nice house with a woman that he's been with for 10 years they had an adult daughter and the man loved his business and all his race cars if anybody has not seen this episode you should watch it it was very enlightening I had no idea anything like this was even going on.... thank goodness I have 2 . Beautiful grown children. . This looks so unethical.. the other guy was in Massachusetts and on five homes they tore his home down to build different property and left a man with nothing... that doesn't sound like a guardianship to me.. evil nasty greedy people that will go to hell. . Supposed to help people not hurt them
Don't get it twisted, this isn't just an ageism issue, it's an ableism issue. It exploits the vulnerability of disabled people and twists it into a justification for that very exploitation. The elderly people being exploited here are all being exploited because of a disability.
A judge without legal experience? What's next, a coroner without medical experience? A sheriff without policing experience? A president without political experience?
April parks was sentenced to 16-40 years in prison in January this year if anyone is interested

I'd go fucking postal! I mean if I was old and nothing to lose. Shit!
Here in 20, pay close attention to the many record breaking disasters, God’s doing something about this
Guardianship is a scam. Theses people take over everything. They can sell your home, cars, take over your assets and nothing is done to them. They get attorneys and the elderly pays for it all.
I travelled here from the year 1987 to say this: fuck hippos.
And I have traveled here from another John Oliver video so I can also say this: Fuck hippos.
my grandma had ALS, and was appointed a guardian, as my mother couldn't care for her. my grandmother had quite a lot of money, and her guardian did not notify the family of her passing until THREE SEPARATE FAMILY MEMBERS felt that something was amiss and went to check up on her, only to find out that she had DIED two months prior. he had spent quite a lot of her money before the family found out. this was some time before i was born, but hearing about all the things that guardians and caretakers do to their charges, i would never trust a caretaker or a guardian with ANYONE in my family, and i myself plan on filing an advance care directive to ensure that i never find myself falling into the gnarled hands of the guardian/caretaker system.
2020 and still no change !!!!!!! #GodFuckAmerca
She trusted Dr Pepper more than actual doctor, and the latter was outlived already
#FreeBritany
I'm going to own a shotgun in my old age so if somebody shows up at my door and declares they are my guardian, they can either walk away, or I can put them in the ground and live the rest of my life in prison where I can live out my days on the government dime and whatever money I have left can go into my commissary account to pay for my Dr. Peppers.
This shit happens when EVERYTHING is for profit.
Chloris Leachman saying fuck hippos reminded me of my grandma. I miss her.
Again, US laws are sooooooooo weird.

"Open air exotic meat market..." Oh. My. This is NOT aging well, pardon the unintentional pun.
The fact that private guardians call their clients' property "wards" is super scary! It sounds like the business is a prison for the elderly and disabled!

@Ian Ward also the OP didnt say they were mutually exclusive
@Ian Ward it seems like you are the only one confused by rhe comments....
@David Amick everybody here, including myself is clearly confused by what the OP means by an "ableism" issue vs. Ageism. I wasnt making an argument for anything as i stated in my last comment, merely asking questions and trying to understand what people think needs to be addressed specifically in order to avoid these problems....i didnt actually state anywhere in my comments that i believe anything about this one way or another.... Wtf is wrong with you people?
@Ian Ward this is a really strange argument. I mean getting old is still not causal of a disability
@Ian Ward blindness and deafness isn’t something only elderly people experience though. Very confused by that argument
Who is here watching this video in 2020 because a certain blonde popstar, struggling with a range of issues, is under the dark cloud of her *conservatorship*!? I wonder if #johnoliver #lastweektonight is going to update this video with more current information.
One thing that really should have been mentioned more- it’s not just the elderly. It’s also people with mental disabilities- either a cognitive disability or a mental illness. It can happen to a HUGE proportion of the population. From the age of 18. So you could for example, have your father become your legal guardian (also known as conservator in some states), and take over your entire life, after you’ve had a mental breakdown, after being worked to the bone since you were five, and have paparazzi be so incredibly nasty, by flying choppers around your house to try to get a nude photo, get that photo, and then call you fat and ugly even though you just had two babies less than two years ago. Yes, I’m talking about Britney Spears, #FreeBritney. She’s given a very small amount to live on, in comparison with her huge wealth, and has only a small amount of time with her children, mostly because their dad filed a restraining order against her father, her conservator, for being violent with the boys. She can’t drive, can’t vote, isn’t allowed to speak publicly about anything about the conservatorship, and if she does, she’s forcefully dragged to a mental facility against her will. The reason they gave? Well, at the end of 2008, Jamie Spears field for a permanent conservatorship, on the basis that Britney was diagnosed with Early Onset Dementia. Funny how since then, she’s done a stint in Las Vegas for four years (which is a huge amount of work), released four albums, done four work tours, and still stings and dances- all things you’d expect would be impossible for someone with her “diagnosis”. She shows no signs of dementia. But her dad gets to control her $250 million net worth, and is kept fat and happy on all her money. And if this can happen to one of the most famous people in the world, if even she can’t get out of it, even though she CLEARLY has the capacity to work extremely hard, what chance do the rest of us have? So yes, it’s a big elder abuse issue. It’s also a disability rights issue. Britney had a very understandable breakdown 12 years ago. Why is she being punished for that? Again, #FreeBritney , because freeing Britney might also help to free others.
Hmmm. Neat. My dad is severely mentally ill and was horribly abusive so i could use this to try to get revenge on him. Thanks for the info
Anything can be an excuse for people to get rid of others' rights and ownership over thair own lives and bodies and take advantage over it.
Neartmhor Exactly I have mental disorders and my parents take care of me yay for my parents
+
slitor why wouldn’t you? I may not enjoy her music much (in fact, I loathe it), but she seems to be a pretty decent person, with a pretty hard life. Her parents used her as a money mine from a really early age, and her continues to do that to this day with the conservatorship. She’s even only allowed 30% custody of her kids because their father took out a restraining order agonist her dad due to her dad being violent with the kids. He sounds like an awful person. Britney, she seems pretty decent.

"Two doctors told me if I drink Dr Pepper I would die, but they died first. Because nobody tells me what to do, or not do. And I tell you that because it was 50 years ago and there is prescription."
Lessons we learned: check on your older family members. Texas lets anyone be a judge. Never tell a old woman not to drink Dr.Peper or you will be slaughtered
Did anyone make a GoFundMe for Rudy and his wife since they lost all their money?? I'm hoping that after this episode aired, they got some financial help from viewers.
