John Oliver explains why filibusters exist, why they shouldn't, and why it's stupid to drink coffee like a cat.

"bad actor".. really John??
‘Neither of us are willing to google when Tiffany’s birthday is’ fuck it, someone has to pretend to care about her... let’s see, ummm ah yes it’s October 13th... oh, oh no... she apparently spent it at maskless parties last year. Well I guess having the last name Trump really does mean you’re a shithead

Pouring coffee and tea into a saucer and drinking from it was practiced almost everywhere the British went, not just America.
Very important that every man, woman and child understands what the filibuster is because it will dictate everyone's futures for decades to come. There is no prospect of any one party getting 60 votes in the Senate anytime soon which means that the Senate is practically useless. And remember the promises by Democrats for $2000 stimulus checks every month? That is most definitely not happening - especially when we have guys like Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema who are Democrats but won't even help the Dems get around the filibuster.
If the filibuster is hell then Angela Merkel is its devil
I have never disagreed with John Oliver more. Jimmy Stewart was an AMAZING actor!
Timely and Accurate recommendation from JPworlds. January 2021, Mitch is trying to filibuster the existence of the senate.
Republicans have taken the tactic to obstruct any legislation that is proposed by the Democrats. They won't even bring it to the floor out of committee for debate. It's unconscionable. The filibuster does nothing to put forward the people's work but rather is used as a tool by political parties (mostly Republicans) to keep the other party from passing any legislation. Do away with it.
Of all the places I've worked, Jamba Juice had the best corporate culture. The worst? Wells Fargo
This is great, but Jimmy Stewart rules.
I love seeing all these people like Orrin Hatch and Claire McCaskill wringing their hands over how far the Senate has fallen... Like watching the clowns ask what's wrong with the circus.
Go back to the UK and stop telling Americans how to run our country. Your country has its own problems, fool. STFU.
Who is back here in 2021?? Still debating the filibuster..
I don't understand why politicians talk about how bad socialism is with all the socialist programs we already have in this country. it's very confusing
Freebooter, actually it is vrijbuiter (which is most likely even harder to pronounce)
John Oliver is amazing. A solid sense of humour while talking and TEACHING US SERIOUS IMPORTANT SUBJECTS..LIKE THE FILIBUSTER BRAVO JOHN !
1:10 John I’m sorry
❤️
Actually I am totally heartbroken and feeling miserable but this guy makes me laugh so hard. Thank you ! Hope Ted will never go down on you.
The first Filibuster didn't take place in 1837, it has been around since Roman times. Famously, a politician named Cato filibustered a bill that Julius Caesar was trying to pass through the Roman Senate in 59 BCE during Caesar's term as Consul of Rome, which led to Caesar ordering the arrest of Cato in a fit of rage. The arrest didn't go through of course, but it did spiral out of control and end up being one of the main reasons for Caesar crossing the Rubicon and being declared an enemy of the Roman Republic.

amazing how this is so relivent now........and im a friad we wont be able to really do anyting this time around thanks to it. oh well. lol
That Ted Cruz segment is needed here in 2021, our senator (Texas) just use a doctor sues story for analytics (What the heck)
Pressure your Senator to end the filibuster. Tell Senate Majority Leader Schumer to act like the Majority and convince Manchin, Sinema and other centrists why they should get rid of it. Call & email them! #EndtheFilibuster
Between McConnell and the filibuster, Democrats don't have a chance to get anything passed
Even with a simple majority Joe Manchin would block almost everything
Who is the hot female assistant at the end ?
The cooling saucer, the sober second thought... I'm sick of legislators calling themselves by these tacky nicknames and thinking they're so cool when in fact they're old and unwanted.
God dammit! I agree with Trump on something (i.e. getting rid of the filibuster)!
Welp
Oh hey... Already important in January 2021.
Who else came back here now that the Democrats have the majority in the Senate? Yes, Mitch is the minority leader. Unsurprisingly, he is fighting like hell to keep the filibuster. Yes, it is risky, but it is time to get rid of the filibuster.
@Nicole DiSchiavi you definitely know what's best for me
@Anti Federalist Were Right bro the Republicans are going to die out. They are a horrible and evil party that helps no one but themselves. When are you gonna wake up and understand you’re voting against your best interest
🙋🏻♀️
It's only time to get rid of the filibuster because the dems have full control? We're you advocating for this when the Republicans had full control in 2017? I bet not! The GOP will inevitably regain control and it will be a sad term for you when you won't be able to stop the bills they are pushing.
But wouldnt they filibuster the legislation ti end the filibuster?
The Democrats finally got a Senate majority and should use it to get rid of the filibuster once and for all. If Schumer fails to deliver, we'd be losing starting in 2022 to the new T***p party left and right, ending up living in a white nationalist dictatorship, and we would've deserved it. Get it done!!!!
actually, closed the video when he called jimmy a bad actor

If they reform the filibuster and force Senators to stand and talk for hours. It should come with a simple rule. That rule is::: You must stay on topic of the bill you are filibustering. You must not deviate to any topic that is not within the bill you are blocking. You can not have any help from your constituents whatsoever..... You can NOT go to the bathroom on the Senate floor or public areas that is not the rest room. and most importantly....... If you can not filibuster for 72-straight hours, the bill gets automatically passed.
You're calling Jimmy Stewart a bad actor and you're an Englishman who didn't know the Dutch had pirates? Seriously check yourself - you're messed up.
And this, friends, is why Georgia was so important. If democrats win they can finally pass bills without this bullshit. If republicans had won they could block everything regardless of what it said like they did for Obama. Luckily, Georgia went democrat.
Why does Jimmy Stewart look like a sick Ryan Gosling in that scene? lol
The accessible david diagnostically license because statement secondarily exist but a true edge. aberrant, deeply washer
Wow i can't believe ted Cruise managed to fuck up standing up and talking
I don’t think we should ban the filibuster but you should remove the ability to half ass them. You want to filibuster prep the speeches. Let’s see you talk for 15 hours straight for 508 days worth of bills. Bring it on. You’re on a salary so earn it XD
Well, now dems have both the house and senate. And M4A still wont happen
I didn’t expect John McCain sternly saying “we’re getting nothing done...” repeatedly being so funny.
so, just get ride of the senate??
Ouch that fall sounds harsh. I hope he had a pad there.
It would be fixed if people needed to talk the whole time. If it was possible to cut someone off, then they wouldn’t be able to continue to make a point.
Ok let them filibuster, but make it so that they cant eat or drink the entire time and they cant swap out people. So make it so they have only one shot to filibuster, cant eat, cant drink, have to end it if they have to use the bathroom(and yes they should have to leave the room to do that), and have to do the entire thing themselves.

Kaitlynn Bennet and republicans "you need your guns to protect yourself, what will lower income families do to protect themselves?" but also when talking about the Breonna Taylor case " Criminals who shoot (to protect themselves) at the police deserve to get killed. " They pretend they want everyone to have guns but are quick to call lower income and black people with guns criminals.
Jimmy Stewart was a fantastic actor.
Mr Oliver: we need to abolish this awful practice that is bad for government and democracy... Unless it helps people I disagree with
I'm dutch and I have no idea what word can possibly become filibuster
The feeling when you look something up on yt to get some more info and see that LWT has a segment on it. Hell yes
@12.56 a gun control bill was filibustered.... GOOD, all "Gun control " legislation is in direct contravention of the constitution and the bill of rights, FUCK YOU John and any politician that wants to take away a citizens rights. What's next John ?, if there is bi-partisan agreement lets infringe the 1st, 4th and 14th amendment...
fuck u, guns should not be in anyone's hands.

So the Senate is basically a John wick movie. Awesome!
I heard Oliver's poem on roasting Ted Cruz like 100 times lol
Hope everyone sees now why the filibuster is so important. Imagine election certification where a simple majority in both houses of congress could overturn election results. Or if Trump declared martial law and the Posse Comitatus act kicked in and simple majority could turn the military on their own people. Our founding fathers were smart guys. Stop trying to undo safety measures that stave off catastrophe.

I always have a tough time with this episode as his take on Chasing Amy is as misguided as the senate and filibuster process
How dare he insult Jimmy Stewart like that
I looked up Dwayne Johnson’s age. John wasn’t joking.
He should have talked about the "nuclear option"
2:40 : Same pirates that sailed up the Medway. Tbf: Dutch culture = pirate culture. Till this day.
I'd still rather go on a platonic date with John Oliver, than The Rock.
Me watching the Jimmy Stewart scene: Wow...he was SUCH an incredible actor! John: He was a bad actor. Me: D: WHAT
The Netherlands even had pirates with official papers from the government. And why is that dutch accent so terrible.

Andrew has the intelligence and technological foresight to move us forward! Elizabeth has the economic grip and scholarly wisdom to traverse our bureaucratic battles! Bernie has the conviction and bravery to fight for the American people since day 1 even when no one else stood with him! Marianne has the fiery heart and soul of america, and its spirit to heal its historic and moral ills! All great candidates 💛 We were unfortunately robbed by the establishment!
Ted Cruz........you aren't even a decent enough person to deserve that Dr. Seuss poem.
the guy at 17:43
The video is very amazing and very action
Some guy no one remembers while filibustering: Someone will listen to me! *No one listens to someone if they're talking for hours and hours on end.*
Reminds me of an West Wing episode :)
My problem with removing the filibuster is that the senate is so skewed towards rural areas (now ideologically significant) that removing it means that republicans simply have an easier time passing shit than dems. We really need a second constitutional convention. The rot runs deep, and Democrats are by no means angels
For those wondering why Thurmond had his aide wait with that bucket, it's because a filibustering senator cannot leave the floor for any reason. So he ended up pissing into the bucket with one of his feet still on the Senate floor, which was only possible because Barry Goldwater asked Thurmond to yield a few moment to him so that he can relieve himself, which Thurmond did.
I'm sorry, I didn't hear anything he said after he said Jimmy Stewart was a bad actor...
None of the comments are actually discussing the filibuster. This shit is a real problem and it needs to be done away with. The Civil Rights Act was passed thanks to Lee Harvey Oswald blowing JFK's head apart - I shouldn't really need to explain that assassinating the President shouldn't be a prerequisite for civil rights.
11:49 🤣
