  • Young strong men coming to our country....women don't want that.... Also Sidney Sheldon and Danielle Steel sold like no books. Women are really into Stephen King and Tom Clancy. Women don't want to read the books of Sidney Sheldon and Danielle Steel, and neither do men, but women really don't want to. Their sales are low! Note: The description John Oliver gave right away made me think of old fashioned paperback romance novels in the drug store around the corner from where I grew up. I even thought he might go with that angle, but I was surprised he didn't. It's racist yes, but it also excuses the fact novels written about this have sold hundreds of millions of copies mostly to women. That's not sexist. That's a fact. And these aren't horror or thrillers novels. They are romance novels so women aren't scared or hateful of this? Also, I know many women enjoy Stephen King and Tom Clancy but I just wanted to use that to make my point.

    • Careful listening to Stephen2462. He likes to gloss over the facts. Here are the actual facts... The Obama Administration _unilaterally_ separated over 90,000 children via his clandestine intimidation tactic against illegal aliens with children. If you illegally cross the border with children, the children will be locked up along with you. That was Obama's immigration policy. Naturally we saw a high influx of just children illegally crossing the border by themselves after that. What a curious, interesting and troubling phenomenon. This is also the time when Obama implemented his catch and release and DACA programs too. Which all of a sudden quickly removed them from these hastily constructed cages. Curiouser and curiouser. Anyway, as anticipated the ACLU and other civil rights parties sued the administration and won. The courts then decided and ruled that you can not lock up children with adults. Wait what? You can't lock children up with adults? No wonder why the ACLU won. Didn't hear any leftwing, SJW, liberal, Democrats losing their minds over this back then. Did you? To this day we still don't know the official number of how many children were separated under Obama. The Democrats are keeping that little tidbit under wraps. I wonder why? Fast forward to Trump. Trump then doubles down on this court order, left over from the Democrats, with his zero tolerance policy. Now all of a sudden leftwing, SJW, liberals and Democrats lose their minds over it. Oh the hypocrisy. And due to this hypocritical public backlash Trump signed an executive order to stop it. Now here comes the ACLU, yet again, suing the Trump Administration. This time to reunite the separated "families" that were effected by his zero tolerance policy. During it's effect the Trump administration separated an estimated 4,368 children. So far less than half of them (2,184) were deemed eligible by the courts to be reunited. As for the rest, so far, the courts couldn't determine their familial relationship, couldn't determin if the child/children may be at risk with the parent or legal guardian, the parent or legal guardian is referred for criminal prosecution, there was reason to suspect the purported parent or legal guardian of human trafficking or smuggling or trafficked by unrelated adults posing as a “family” in an effort to avoid detention, the alleged parent or legal guardian poses a safety risk to the child (e.g. suspected child abuse), the alleged parent or legal guardian has already been deported, the alleged parent or legal guardian waived unification, ect, ect,. So let's do a recap here. At least 90,000 children were indirectly separated from their actual parents by a unilateral Obama Administration intimidation policy. While the Trump Administration's zero tolerance policy separated 2,184 children from their actual parents. At least 90,000 vs 2,184.

      BenJamin CroftBenJamin Croft2 ヶ月 前
    • It's technically true, but there's critical context your friend either didn't know or deliberately left out. There was a period during the obama administration in which there was a sudden influx of unaccompanied minors, and the Obama administration had to use hastily constructed temporary facilities to hold them until they could figure out what to do with them; kids were only held there for three days or so. The Trump administration, in contrast, made these facilities permanent and expanded them to accommodate the Trump administration's family separation policy. So yes, Obama did build the cages, but they had a very different purpose, and can't really be compared to the sick shit the Trump administration has done.

The "rumor" is suggesting that these short segments of the film, that was aired are insinuating that little boy, Jenri, who was crying and saying things like, "You don't love me!", "You're not my mom!", and "I want to go back to jail!" because he was "traumatized" from being separated from his mother for a month, by immigrations and customs, after being detained along with his mother, Anita, for illegally crossing the border, is *not true.* When in actuality, the creators conveniently and deliberately edited out the part that led up to that incident of Jenri lying on the bed, crying and saying those things. The creators edited out the part that shows Jenri's mother trying to calm him down for bedtime, because he is excited about flying on a plane to South Carolina to be with his father tomorrow morning. Jenri refuses to listen, ignores her and continues to act up and even pitches a hissy fit over it. Anita then disciplines him by spanking him. That's why Jenri was crying and saying those things. Because he was disciplined by his mother for not listening to her. *Not* because he was "traumatized" for being separated from his mother for a month. Furthermore, the documentary also leaves out the fact that Jenri suffers from Rickets and that he actually misses being at the detention facility because he got to eat three meals a day with friends that he made while being there. One can easily deduce, that after watching this documentary, that it was clearly edited in such a way in order to insinuate that Jenri was suffering from some kind of PTSD from being separated from his mother. If this is true, then this isn't journalism. The only way to confirm this is to get a hold of the unedited footage. And what a story this would make too. Especially when immigration is a such a hot topic right now. Can't confirm or deny this. The only way is to get in touch with The Atlantic, a very democratic leftwing leaning news organization, who sponsored the documentary, to release the unedited footage. It's been almost 2 years now and still no response back and nobody seems care either. smh...

But we've become so indoctrinated, that this apathy carries over to treating other people. Many of these issues John brings up, it's why things have gotten so bad here.

  • People from the US: you don't live in the "best country in the world". Americans sound like indoctrinated people from any autocratic dictatorship from around the globe. From China to North Korea, from Hungary to, increasingly, Brazil - in every place where a broken system is defended as the best political or economic system "in the world", that only indicates a worrysome level of lack of self-awareness from the public that buy into that propaganda. There is no "best country in the world". And if there is, I'm sure that it wouldn't be a racist plutocracy, historically envolved in coups and desestabilizations of other countries like the US. It's sad to listen to an immigrant like John Oliver say these word seeminly oblivious to the attroceties commited by the country he choose to live.

    • I know the road people like you go down. Native Americans were here first and that we stole their land and slavery and racism, ect, ect. Yes. I know this, understand it, and I don't condone it either. Do the the means justify the ends? Of course not. But I'm not gonna deny the fact that that is exactly how other countries have fought for and acquired land and how they also mistreated other people since the beginning of man kind. No country didn't get to where they are now by playing it nice. I have no problem recognizing my country's flaws. Past or present. Every country has its flaws. But if America has to be the only country in the world that has to feel sorry and apologize and reconcile for it's flaws, I call bs on that! Why does the US have to be the only country to feel sorry and apologize for it's past even though every country is guilty of the same things too? I'm not saying what we did was ok it just seems that people who go down this road aren't really looking for an apology and aren't really genuine about their morality either. They just want to hate America and destroy what we've worked so hard to achieve. We're certainly not flawless but then again who is? But when it comes to greatness in regards to freedom, innovation, history, scenery, entertainment, ect. ect. we lead the world. We lead the world in greatness in so many ways it staggers the imagination. I'm not saying that just because I'm an American or as a "Ha ha! We're better than you!" bs. No. Other countries have their greatnessess too. But the USA is the leader in greatness. Why demonize these great morals, ethics, principles, hard work, and sacrifices that achieved these greatnessess based solely on past mistakes? I believe in second chances. I believe in redemption. But mostly, I believe in Americans.
