On our last episode of the year, we couldn’t show our Brexit segment in the UK because of their stupid ban on using footage from Parliament. What did they get instead? They got this.

  • As much as I wish the referendum was in favour of remain, there’s one thing you’re missing. WE voted to leave. All parliament is doing is honouring that vote. The split is still here, and without clear indication of the people changing their minds, it’s stuck. There are remainers (aka remoaners) in Parliament who are in support of Brexit, because it is a democracy. The only thing that I wish Parliament would do is to allow a snap election after Boris Johnson is elected by the Tory party, had allowed the public a say in the type of Brexit we wanted, and that neither side had not lied to us (such as funding for the NHS, the money we’d gain, the percentage of laws our country has carried over, etc...) and allowed a fair referendum in the first place. There are so many things Parliament is doing wrong, but it’s not as simple to fix as doing a second referendum or going against the first. I love your work John Oliver, but I think you’re misinterpreting the way we got here, and how we could get out. I repeat, if I could vote in a second referendum, I would still want to vote remain.

    Matt MosleyMatt Mosley年 前
    • @Matt Mosley No, you chose to make up a number to try and make yourself seem less stupid, I took the net number which is what you're supposed to take if you actually read the page. Do remember you need the ability to perform basic maths before you can call anyone retarded, which means actually completing the sum and not stopping at a number that sounds good. Even if your mental capacity is that of someone in primary school, you should understand that. I mean you're trying to act like your initial claim wasn't a load of bull and you apparently have two brain cells to rub together.

      Jock DuffJock Duff年 前
    • @Matt Mosley Apparently maths isn't your strong point, given that 9 billion divided by 365 is not 35.6. With that in mind, it really is no wonder your thought process stops there. It's estimated being a member of the EU is worth £75 billion+ to the UK economy. Each year. Try and figure out which is bigger.

      Jock DuffJock Duff年 前
    • @Jock Duff and your site (which doesn't include everything) still has it at £35.6-million a day. Is that not tsill a FUKLOAD!? :-) Bye.

    • @Jock Duff Sure mate ;-)

      Matt MosleyMatt Mosley年 前
    • Given the £44+million "A DAY" was shown to be a lie on serval occasions, you should probably learn to actually research information before calling people dumbasses. My suggestion to start is to not take all your information from the side of a red bus championed by one of the dumbest politicians in the country. Here, since it's never too late to learn: fullfact.org/europe/our-eu-membership-fee-55-million/

Side side note. Do you think by "Chapter Fucking Two" John means, chapter fucking Two OR the chapter is called Fucking Two and we're getting that chapter next?

  • The subject of John oliver came up when a colleague (fellow psychologist) and I were discussing politics a few months ago. Although we were both in agreement regarding the general shitlib inanity of the HBO show, my friend was surprised when I explained that the real insidiousness of it is its unmistakably hypnotic structure and pacing. I ended up pulling up an episode or two off of youtube to show her what I meant. All of the segments I've ever seen from this show follow the same repetitive format: present some "argumentation" and "facts" for about 10 seconds, then quickly follow these up with a snarky quip (which themselves overwhelmingly take the form of complete non-sequitur or otherwise absurd metaphor) before any rational processing of the preceding argument can take place in the mind of the viewer. Further telling is that the only 'beats' or mental pauses in the show's pacing exist solely to highlight the approving laughter or applause of the studio audience. Repeat this basic formula without variation 20-40 times in a row and you have one of the 12-20 minute 'segments' that form the backbone of the show The end effect is (obviously) not to deliver information, but rather to literally teach the viewers -- on a subconscious level -- to mentally associate derisive laughter with any person or opinion that is at odds with the narrative's take on the chosen issue. And it accomplishes this by maintaining a strict adherence to a roughly 20-second cycle in which a stimulus is presented, and a response is cued This is the sense in which the show is fundamentally hypnotic in effect -- even moreso than its precursors in the genre (Daily Show, Colbert, etc). To my mind, oliver's show is representative of the media's increasing mastery of the methodologies of mass conditioning; in fact it is almost such a perfect technical accomplishment that I would almost have to admire it on technical grounds, which moreover is in the hands of the entirely wrong people.

    WDeeGee1WDeeGee1年 前
    • Oh, I don't know, you seem to be learning to spin your bullshit. Shall I give it a try? The first, of course, is to exclaim that you just so happened to have a conversation with a colleague. Now, why is this important? Well, you use it to establish credentials focusing on them, and avoid pointing directly at yourself. Perhaps you think this makes your opinion more palatable, approachable, or yourself more humble but the effort to indirectly craft your own attempt at credibility is there. All under a casual conversation you just happened to have. Of course, we should note that despite attempts to spice up your vocabulary you staunchly avoid any actual terms from psychology. No slippage from the professional sphere into a personal explanation out of habit, nothing that could require an extended explanation to someone outside the field or something that perhaps could be researched a reveal a flaw in your explanation. All very safe, all very deniable and requiring minimal explanation while sounding good. So long as anyone doesn't look too deeply anyway. Then, of course, you launch into your bit under the "trust me, I'm a psychologist" guise and some pretty standard tactics follow. You place the words "argument" and "facts" into brackets to imply they are false, though you never actually prove they are so. No extended explanations, or examples to actually show there are poor arguments or things being passed off as facts that are not. You simply say it, and trust in that authority of that previous declaration of "trust me, I'm a psychologist" to lend you the credibility to your statements - with occasional quips in brackets not unline those oneliners you try to complain about. This, of course, leads to accusations about the media, the big bad everyone should mistrust and a nice big word to fit them all in a group and label them as the "other" to be opposed, to be mistrusted - not by actually showing examples of misuse or deception but simply upon your unsupported declarations Of course eventually, we get to the point. Last Week Tonight, Daily Show, Colbert are all the "entirely wrong people". Which points to this being that you don't like what they say. Which you probably could have said in a sentence and saved yourself the time. Instead, you have to cast the illusion that you were someone to be taken seriously. That faux-attempt at critical thought where you want all the credit with none of the effort or ability. It's actually pretty easy to spot a professional you know, even if you don't work in their field.

      Jock DuffJock Duff年 前
  • As a British Citizen, I was totally outvoted on this issue by people stupidly swayed by very easily spotted lies. Obviously, we should have had more of the Bigfoot porn but apparently 17 million complete morons do not appreciate the finer points of literature.

    LucheLuche年 前
    • @Lucas You misunderstand, I know a few people who know EXACTLY what they were voting for and that is their choice, their opinion and fair play to them. But a good chunk of the voters had no idea what they were voting for or do any sort of research into it. THOSE people are idiots. If you feel personally attacked by that then that's your own problem.
